Projects

Throughout the year SIFE members complete a number of different projects that aim to make a difference in our community. There have been many different types of SIFE projects through out the years and every year there is always discussion about new projects.

Bartending 101

This program gives it’s participants an insight into what it would take to open up their own bar or be a bartender. We partner with a local bar and then one evening we have the owner of the bar talk about the different regulations and startup costs for owning your own business/bar. This program allows young entrepreneur to here advice from and ask questions to a successful business owner and gain hands on experiences.

Fair Trade Market

SIFE partnered up with numerous fair trade groups to help sell their products. The international fair trade week helps get products produced from small time farmers in foreign countries a fair price for their products. SIFE helped to organize the event and sell the products

Campbell's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Inspired by Campbell's Stamp Out Hunger Challenge given to SIFE schools, K-State SIFE is working with local businesses to setup booths raising money as well as offering coupon books for donations. Being within twenty minutes of Fort Riley, we have decided to have our drive donations given directly to military families in need. Also, we will be conducting a class to these wives and other interested family members about financial independency. Doing this project will fulfill multiple criteria for SIFE as well as totally encapsulate the requirements for the Campbell's Stamp Out Hunger Challenge. This project will take place late January and early February of 2008.

High School Symposium

Each year SIFE hosts a symposium for high school students throughout the state of Kansas. We invite them to come and hear a keynote speaker talk about today’s relevant business topics and then they participate in “breakout” sessions. In these sessions we teach the basics of marketing, finance, and international business.

International Trade

This year we partnered with the SIFE teams from the Salina campus and SMSU in Minnesota. We went into a local elementary school and taught the kids about international trade. We set up the different schools as different countries and each school made bracelets to sell. We then sent the bracelets to different schools for the kids to “buy”. Through the program, students learned about exchange rates, marketing, and supply and demand. This project gave the students the opportunity to do basic trading and interact with kids throughout the state and the country.

Edison Project

This project is a collaborative effort with Graceland University to simply change out light bulbs. We are in the initial phases of this project as we have upcoming meetings with our university's sustainability department as well as with the CEO of the local chamber of commerce to promote energy friendly, Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs, or CFL's, to be used instead of incandescent bulbs.

Faculty Appreciation

Every month we think of a creative way to show appreciation for the K-State faculty. We try to be very creative, and tie in different themes that correlate with the month. An example of this would be making turkey shaped cookies in November.

Financial Case Competition

Every year we compete in at least one financial case competition. In these competitions we are presented with a fictional scenario of a family or companies finances. We are then given 36 hours to create a short-term, mid-term, and long-term financial plan. At the end of the 36 hours we present our plan to a panel of judges and they decide on a winning team.
